Hazel Atlas

In the mid 1930′s Hazel Atlas Glassware was a powerful company, situated in West Virginia, it was  the largest manufacturer of glassware in the world.
It owned about fifteen factories and made containers, tableware, and various decorative items, continuing in operation until about 1956 in West Virginia.
The company made beautiful depression ware, including such things as kitchen knives made of glass, which were very popular for cutting things such as semi-soft cheeses, and they also made salad sets, glass spoons and forks, as well as mixing and serving bowls, ashtrays and salt and pepper sets as well as spice sets.

At that time (1956) Hazel Atlas was purchased by the Continental Can Company, themselves a monster in the container industry, in a move that was challenged by the US government under the Antitrust laws.

The case was, in the end, decided by the US Supreme court. (United States v. Continental Can Co.)

The glassware produced by Hazel Atlas remains a popular collectors item today, and among the things you may see in your collecting travels are some of those viewed below:
