What exactly is Delft? ![]() Tin-glazed Delft Many people refer to Delft as that which is made by only one company but the fact is th at Delft Pottery was made by many companies over the centuries, although only one of the traditional companies is still in business. Delft is a pottery that is tin glazed, and was begun in about the seventeenth century. It was made in England in the 18th century, and the word delft will appear on some pottery made in Asia as well as Germany in the 20th century, although some of it is not traditional Delft, and some is in fact probably considered Delft but could not stand up against the high standards of measurement that the Royal Delft company sets. Royal Delft is the last of the traditional Delft factories that survived the ensuing years since they began production in the 17th century. Royal Delft Porcelain is the last remaining factory of its kind in the world today, and is ![]() Delft pitcher In Dutch the name is Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles. When translated to the English, it means,"Royal Porcelain Jar". Royal Delft was begun in the year 1653 by David Anthonisz van der Pieth. Three centuries and a few odd years later, they are still in business, celebrating their 350th anniversary five years ago in 2003. Most of us know the very famous blue and white colored porcelain, but the Royal Delft is the only officially sanctioned factory permitted to use the title Royal, however that word is not a trademark, and in fact, in many cases, is not used on the actual products. Royal Delft Porcelain is still made entirely by hand. Quality control is rigid and the masters must go through some serious training prior to being permitted to become official painters. Not every piece of Royal Delft is just blue and white, many also are multicolored, although the designs remain somewhat similar to the blue and white versions. Official Royal Delft collectors’ porcelain is manufactured in Delft, in the Netherlands, by the Royal Delft factory, who received their royal sanction in 1919. Each piece of Delft made by the Royal Delft company will include the factory mark, the item number, the initials of the artist and a date code. ![]() Royal Delft Glass Mark The Royal Delft Glass Mark currently in use is this one, although as with many other companies it has changed over the years. |

I have a wall plate with the following marks:
A crown with a symbol above it in the form of a ‘Y’, the letters ‘KB’ below it, and below that the words ‘Handwerk Delft Holland’. Are you able to put a date to the mark and a name to the artist, please? Indeed, does this look like a genuine Delft piece?

I have a delft single tile that is in the form of a landscape and has a windmill with a house beside it and a boat in what appears to be a river beside the windmill.
On the back are the marks of this.
the circle on the left side has what looks like a wreath with a G in the middle and on the right side it has the numbers 24 on the top with two litle raised dots under it and 3 on the right and 4 on the bottom and 8 on the left side of that circle.
at the bottom there is the crown and the delft signature and handpainted in Holland and some kind of signature below that. This tile is 6″x6″ and is very colorfull with the main scene being in the circle and all around that are flowers that are a red or dark mauve color and green and yellow.
Thanks for any help that you can provide me.
