Crackleware Glass is not a particular glass style and it isn’t by any means limited to one designer or another.

It isn’t from any one time period and isn’t limited to any certain era.

In fact it is still being produced today.

Crackle is method of finishing the glass that is applied to the glass once it has been made to give the illusion of being cracked all over.

Crackleware glass makes a wonderful addition to any glass collection, whether you prefer vintage pieces or modern.

The finish is added while the piece is still hot from making, by dipping it into cold water, which causes a very sudden change in temperature making the outside crack.

The pieces are then reheated, smoothed and strengthened while the lines of crackling remain.

Many glass collectors focus only on pieces like this special type of finishing, and there are literally thousands of them, from miniatures to windows.

Most generally the smaller pieces will garner very reasonably prices and even thought hey are hand made; they can be purchased for fewer than 100 dollars quite frequently.

On the high end price scale are some which were made in the mid fifties and sixties, by Blenko.

Dozens of companies made crackle glass at many different times but the most popular were mostly based in West Virginia.

Five West Virginia companies, notably, Blenko, Pilgrim, Rainbow, Bischoff, and Kanawha were responsible for most of the colorful crackle glass seen at flea markets shops, and on the internet.

Crackleware refers to a method of producing glassware and art glass pieces with a distinctive crackled finish.

In addition to these factories, some of the large so-called Depression Era companies made a limited amount of crackle glass.

Generally, the vast array of the smaller pieces such as the miniature vases, pitchers, and jugs were made by Pilgrim and Rainbow.

Most of these pieces can be found for very reasonable prices making them available to those collectors on a budget.
